Directions of Use

Dried elderberries should be simmered or cooked before consuming and are not intended to be eaten raw. Quantities vary by recipe, so adjust to suit your formulation.

1. Herbal tea: Add dried elderberries to a saucepan of water, bring to a gentle boil, then simmer for 15–20 minutes. Strain and sweeten to taste if desired.

2. Syrups and juices: Simmer the berries in water until the liquid reduces and the berries soften, strain, then add honey or sugar as your recipe requires.

3. Gummies, jams and baking: Rehydrate and cook the berries first, then use the resulting liquid or pulp in your recipe.

4. Wine and ferments: Use as the fruit base in home winemaking, following your recipe’s instructions for quantities.

5. Blending: Combine with other herbs, fruits and spices in tea blends or manufactured products.

Dried Elderberries 5kg Carton — FAQs

Common questions about our bulk dried elderberries.

Dried elderberries are the berries of the Sambucus nigra shrub, dried for long-lasting storage. They have a tart, deep-purple character and are traditionally used in herbal teas, syrups, juices, gummies, jams and homemade wine. Many people also use them as part of a wellness routine, and it's always best to speak with a healthcare professional about your individual needs.
Raw or unripe elderberries, along with the leaves, stems and bark of the plant, contain compounds that may cause stomach upset, which is why elderberries are traditionally simmered or cooked before consuming. We recommend cooking dried elderberries thoroughly in tea, syrup, juice or recipes rather than eating them raw. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or have any health concerns, please check with a healthcare professional first.
For tea, simmer dried elderberries in water for around 15 to 20 minutes, then strain. For syrup, simmer the berries in water until softened and reduced, strain, and add honey or sugar as your recipe requires. The same cooked berries and liquid can be used for juice, gummies and jams. Quantities vary by recipe, so adjust to suit your taste or formulation.
Elderberries have a tart, tangy flavour with a deep, earthy berry character that is often compared to a mix of blackcurrant and blueberry. Dried elderberries are more concentrated than fresh and are usually combined with honey, sugar, spices or other fruit to balance the tartness.
